Your patient complains of nausea
and as part of your work-up, you decide to order fecal occult
blood testing (FOBT / guaiac).
-
You determine that the
appropriate diagnosis code is 787.02 (Nausea alone).
-
Use NCDMeister to ensure that the
ICD-9 code you've chosen (787.02) will result in payment for the
lab test.
-
Click on the Magnifying Glass
icon at the bottom of the screen to open the Find window.

The search
found 787.02 within NCDMeister. Note that at the top
of the screen in green are tests payable for these ICD-9
diagnosis codes. Digoxin level, FOBT, and Hepatitis panel
are all payable for these codes.
-
So we have confirmed that ICD-9
code 787.02 justifies payment from Medicare for Fecal Occult
Blood testing.
-
Mission Accomplished!

Let's say the search found 787.02
but the test you were ordering wasn't listed at the top of the
screen in green.
-
For example, if you were ordering
a GGT instead of Fecal Occult Blood test you would do the search
in the same way. But because GGT isn't listed in green at
the top of this screen, you would need to click the Find Again
icon (Magnifying Glass with a + sign in it) to continue
searching NCDMeister until either you find a screen that
includes the 787.02 code AND has GGT in green at the top or
until there are no more instances of the code found in
NCDMeister.
